What is your favourite way of river fishing?......... I love trotting a float, trying to tempt all kinds of silver fish.

However, my best river fish ever was/is my very first barbel which I caught a weekend before close season started. A catch I will never forget and will stay in my mind for ever. A beautiful 12lb5oz barbel, which was a little bit too big for my 20 inch spoon landing net lol.

And to top the day off I even managed to catch my PB chub of 4lb4oz, I can honestly say it was ...

Lower Itchen Fishery.

We had arranged a trip, through a forum, to the Lower Itchen Fishery in search of grayling. I am a great fan of grayling fishing and do get plenty of opportunities to target them as I live near the Hampshire Avon, some of the best Grayling waters around. The grayling, or "Lady of the Stream" is a beautiful fish, keen to feed on cold days and a marvellous fighter, so much so that the return of a grayling to the water takes time as they often come to the net exhausted.

First trip this year

Well snow has gone ( nearly ) and I was feeling fit enough to attempt a small fishing trip, I realised that I had not wet a line for nearly 3 months, seems that too many other things had got in the way.

So we had a late start, knowing it was a frosty night I did not feel the need to get there at daft o'clock, and we set off to the local canal to hunt some tiddlers for points.

We arrived at about 10 am and found the canal still a sheet of ice, the hills near by still ...

After all the manic of x-mas and New Year and a long suffering with a painful stiff neck (everybody say awwwww), I finally managed to have my first session in over 6 weeks.

As I have mentioned before, a very Dear friend bought me a lovely centrepin for x-mas, so today was the day to give it it's first trial run.

Due to the cold weather I decided to stay close to home, so my chosen venue was Lords Walk, a local stretch of the Hampshire Avon.

Kitted up with the smallest amount of ...

A dirty weekend with Sabrina

Claudia and I had a couple of days off around this weekend and had planned to visit Dicky and Jim on the river Severn. The plan was for me to do a bit of Barbel fishing, Claudia was after Zander and possibly a Barbel.

We set of Friday morning and took a leisurely drive to the Severn, we arrived at the tackle shop to get our tickets only to find Jim and Paul in there, so after tips were gathered and the last few essentials purchased, it was off to the river, ...

Trip to the canal.

After last weekend, where I was too shattered after a business trip, and Claudia's boat trip was cancelled, when neither of us fished (shock!!!!), we had to get out this week. The forecast was looking a bit rough, but we decided to tough it out and go for a trip to the Kennet and Avon canal, it is reasonable local, and if it was a short session due to weather, not a great expense.

6-30 arrived, alarm ringing, wind blowing ( outside too!!) and raining hard!! I must admit ...

Me and the boss are off to the river Severn near Worcester this weekend for 3 days of fishing. We are hunting barbel and maybe a little dabble for some Zander.

We have the luxury of an openday on the Sunday on a stretch reserved for Barbel Society members, so hoping to pick up some sound advice and get a chance of one of the better fish on the river.

We will also be in full tackle tart mode as "she who must be taken fishing" has lots of new toys to try out.

Will post up our ...

Taking the Pin for a Spin

I treated myself to some toys this month, I got myself a Shimano Hyperloop fast action 13ft match rod, and a very cheap (£9.99) Shadowlanda Centrepin reel.

The reel is a press steel body but has a very nice bearing in it, heard very little about it, but for a tenner I thought I would give it a try.

I have never fished a "pin" before so today was a bit of a training day. I did not realise what a pain they are to cast! after about 10 attempts I managed ...
